Procedure Description
Intra-articular injection involves administering medication (such as corticosteroids, hyaluronic acid, biologics, or other therapeutics) directly into a horse’s joint(s) to help reduce inflammation and/or improve performance and comfort.
Potential Benefits
• Reduction of joint pain and inflammation
• Improved mobility and performance
• Slowing progression of degenerative joint disease
Risks and Possible Complications
While intra-articular injections are commonly performed, they do carry potential risks, including but not limited to:
• Joint infection (septic arthritis)
• Localized swelling, heat, or pain at the injection site
• Bleeding, tissue irritation, or scarring
• Allergic reaction to medications
• Laminitis (rare but possible with corticosteroid use)
• Treatment failure or recurrence of lameness
Aftercare Instructions
• Stall rest for 24 hours then hand-walking/pasture turnout for 3 days (as directed by veterinarian). This may be different for each product used in the joint so please refer to specific instructions provided by the veterinarian.
• No strenuous exercise for 7 days
• Monitor injection sites for heat, swelling, or discharge
• Contact veterinarian immediately if horse shows signs of fever, severe lameness, or abnormal swelling
Consent Statement
I, the undersigned owner or authorized agent of the above-named horse, certify that I am over 18 years of age and authorize Equine Performance Veterinary Services, PLLC to perform intra-articular injections as recommended on this horse. I acknowledge that I have been informed of the nature of the procedure, potential benefits, risks, and possible complications. I understand that no guarantee of success or cure can be made.
This consent shall remain valid for one (1) year from the date of signature, unless revoked in writing by the owner/agent prior to that date.
I accept financial responsibility for all services rendered and agree to follow aftercare instructions provided by the veterinarian.
